Growing up in Hungary, körözött was one of those simple foods that always felt like home. 🇭🇺❤️ Spread generously on a slice of fresh bread and served with crunchy cucumber, tomatoes or peppers, it made the kind of breakfast that didn’t need to be fancy to be delicious.
This traditional Hungarian cheese spread is creamy, savory and full of flavor from Hungarian paprika, onion and caraway seeds. Best of all, it takes only a few minutes to prepare.
Like many Hungarian classics, every family seems to have its own way of making körözött — and, of course, everyone thinks their version is the best. 😃 This is my version, inspired by the flavors I remember from my childhood in Hungary.
If you’re looking for an easy Hungarian breakfast or appetizer, grab some fresh bread and give this one a try. One bite might just explain why körözött remains such a beloved Hungarian favorite. ❤️🤍💚

Servings: 4–6

Ingredients: 250 g túró, farmer’s cheese or well-drained cottage cheese; 50 g softened butter; 2–3 tbsp sour cream; ½ small red onion, finely chopped; 1–2 tsp Hungarian sweet paprika; ½ tsp caraway seeds; 1 small garlic clove, minced; salt and black pepper to taste.

Serving suggestions: Fresh bread, cucumber, tomatoes and fresh peppers.

Instructions: Mix the túró or cottage cheese with softened butter and sour cream until creamy. Add the finely chopped red onion, Hungarian paprika, caraway and garlic. Season with salt and pepper, then mix well. Chill for about 30 minutes so the flavors can develop. Serve generously on fresh bread with cucumber, tomato or peppers.
